Networking and Structured Cabling

A structured cabling system is a complete system of cabling and associated hardware, which provides a comprehensive telecommunications infrastructure. This infrastructure serves a wide range of uses, such as to provide telephone service or transmit data through a computer network. It should not be device dependent.

Mainly there are three types of ethernet cables used in LANs i.e., Coaxial cables, Twisted Pair cables, and Fiber optic cables.

Structured cabling standards help organizations install wiring in a way that prevents these messy tangles by keeping the whole wiring infrastructure organized. This results in lower downtimes and less room for human error.

What are types of network cabling?

  • Coaxial Cable. Coaxial cables have a single copper conductor at the center, while a plastic layer provides insulation between the center conductor and braided metal shield.
  • Fiber Optic Cable
  • Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) Cable.
  • Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) Cable.
